Car Donations: How Does Car Donations Work?
How Does Car Donations Work?
Car Donations have emerged as one of the significant tax shelters for the donors. Though, the revised federal rules have restricted the tax deduction benefits, still one can make impressive tax deductions through donating a used car. Car donation is a noble cause since by donating your vehicle you are helping a family in need. Though this is one of the main and most important reasons why people think of donating their car, perhaps another reason would be to obtain a tax deduction.
Car Donations Tax Deductions
Donors with questions about whether a contribution is deductible should call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040. Donors concerned that contributions are being solicited for fraudulent purposes should contact the appropriate state charity official, who is often located in the state attorney generals office.
Below are some frequently asked questions pertaining to Car Donations and donating cars to charities:
Yes. and only if of course the Car Donation Company of choice is classified with the IRS as a non-profit charitable organization. Donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. Individual tax situations vary so please check with a tax professional to determine what if any benefit you may receive.
What do I need to donate my vehicle?
The title to the vehicle would be fine but this may vary from state to state. Also,if you do not have title to the vehicle that you wish to donate,It is possible that other arrangements may be made and of course this would solely rely on your State laws and the particular Car Donation Organization of choice.
How is the value of my car determined?
The IRS allows you, the taxpayer, to claim a tax deduction of (a) the value of your vehicle up to $500 or (b) if the Car Donation of choice (The Company that you choose to donate your vehicle to) sell the vehicle for more than $500 would mail you a postcard with that value for your tax purposes.
How will the car be picked up?
Usually Car Donation Companies will arrange to have your vehicle towed away by a professionally licensed, bonded and insured towing company and this usually will occur in 3-4 business days.
Donating a car can be as simple as 1,2,3 and some of the best advantages when it comes to donating a car is having a opportunity to get rid of a vehicle that may or may not be running so that you may create extra space in your driveway or garage. Also,a tax deduction is always a good thing (smile). Last but certainly not least, having a chance to help others by freely giving and being apart of a good cause in my opinion is the ultimate winner here!
We will leave you with some cool car donation videos. Enjoy.

Donating a vehicle can be a great way to give to your favorite charity. The government will recognize your generosity with a special tax deduction, but certain requirements apply in realizing these tax breaks.
Policies regarding vehicle donations are not as straightforward as with other types of charitable contributions. The tax relief you can receive depends not only on the claimed value of your donation, but also on the way the charity uses the vehicle. For this reason, you may not know what your full tax deduction will be at the time that you make your donation. As of 2005, there have been changes to the statutes for tax deduction for vehicles donated to charitable trusts. If the stated value of the donated vehicle is more than $500, and if such vehicle is put up for sale by the charitable trust, then the taxpayer is limited to the gross profits from the transaction.
Taxpayers wishing to benefit from such a charitable donation need to keep the following points in mind:
Itemize Your Deductions
To take full advantage of the deductions available for your car donation, you need to itemize your deductions. Those who claim standard education are not able to benefit from this clause.
Estimate the Fair Market Value
Various factors must be considered in determining the value of your car. Refer to a used car guide for precise instructions to find your vehicle’s value. Adjustments should be made depending on accessories, mileage and other indicators of its general condition.
Deduct the Fair Market Value
When making your claim, deduct the fair market value of the vehicle. This amount takes into consideration the condition of the donated vehicle. You may not claim the full value of the car.
Verify the Eligibility of the Organization
The charitable trust must qualify with the tax department in order for you to receive a tax benefit. A good place to find a complete list of recognized charities on with Publication 78, available online and in public libraries.
File the Charitable Contribution Deduction
When claiming a tax deduction for your vehicle donation, it is essential to keep good records. Be sure to keep and record all receipts and forms related to the car donation, and its fair market value.
If you’ve donated a vehicle and want to know if your contribution is tax deductible, contact the IRS at 1-800-829-1040, or for TTY/TDD help, call 1-800-829-4059. If you are concerned that contributions have been sought for deceitful purposes, contact the appropriate state charity official, located in the state Attorney General’s office.
If you have a spare vehicle, consider donating it to your favorite registered charity. The organization, and the taxman, will thank you.

This was a very interesting blog, I am all the time looking for a tax deduction of some sort and now days the interest from you mortgage isn’t enough. I have an old car that has been setting for quite awhile are you sure they would take that as a donation? As long as it runs and is in fairly good condition you can donate it right? A $500 deduction is better than nothing.

Have they ever had someone work out a deal to get a car then donate it back to them after they were able to acquire their own? I can’t afford to buy a car yet but I need one desperately, so if I could get one temporarily, until I could buy one then I’d donate it back to them for the next person in need, I wonder if they’d do something like that.
January 16th, 2012 at 10:52 pm
I read through your blog rather quickly, did you mention what they do with these donations as far as how they determine who they are going to give the donation to. My son was in a car accident and his car was totaled, he works part time but can’t find a full time job right now, like a lot of us, and he really needs a car, would he be eligible for a car donation?

This was a very interesting blog and you put a lot of helpful information in it as to how they determine the value and what they might give you for a deduction. This is really great and I hope that anybody reading this will take it to heart because you could seriously help someone out doing this as well. In today’s economy this could be a life changer.

I understand this program because there is a legitimate need, just like donating clothes and food. But I have been traveling around the south east part of the country and they have what is called Boat Angel and it is a company that you can donate your boat to, why would you have a program like this other than to get that tax deduction?
January 17th, 2012 at 6:27 pm
How do they determine the amount they are going to give you on your right off? And how do they determine who they are going to donate the car to? If you have a car to donate and you have a friend that needs a car, instead of going through the program can you just donate it to him and still get the tax right off? This was a very interesting bit of news.
January 17th, 2012 at 6:42 pm
I think this is a great program. You mentioned all you need to donate a car is the title correct and they will have it towed away for you? My husband and I are getting a divorce because of his infidelity and I want to give his car away, the title is in both our names as an either/or and the lien has been released, can I give it away if that is the case?

This is really great information, I’ve seen things around town for donated cars but I didn’t know that they were tax deductable as well. What constitutes someone in need of a car? I guess what I’m asking is, how’s it determined who would get the car if you had one donated? I’d love to be able to help someone out this way and I’m old enough now that I don’t drive anymore so it’s perfect.
